Memorial to honour fallen Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan to be built in Toronto

The magnificent stone edifice will be the first of its kind in Canada.

TORONTO, CANADA, Nov. 10, 2009 - As the mission in Afghanistan makes a strategic shift from eliminating terrorist insurgency to gaining support of the Afghan population, Toronto gears up to build the first ever Memorial Monument to pay tribute to fallen Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.

Toronto-based Canadian Museum of Hindu Civilization (CMOHC) will be the first Canadian organization to build a Memorial Monument dedicated to Canadian soldiers who have lost their lives in the eight-year old mission in Afghanistan.

“The internationally designed stone monument will be unveiled at the museum premises in Richmond Hill on April 10th, 2010,” said Chair of CMOHC, Ms. Shylee Someshwar.

“CMOHC has undertaken several initiatives dedicated to world peace and we thought it was only befitting to embark on one that would serve as a permanent remembrance of our brave soldiers. Future generations need to know about the ultimate sacrifice they have made on our behalf, so that we may enjoy relative peace and prosperity.” added Ms. Someshwar.

Families of the fallen soldiers, the armed forces, survivors, dignitaries from the government, will attend the April 10th event. It will also be open to the public at large.

“We invite likeminded organizations and Torontonians to join hands in making this initiative a grand Canadian success,” said Dr. Doobay who has worked tirelessly for over four decades to spread the message of peace and harmony.

“The families who are left behind should have some comfort that prayers will be done daily for the souls of their loved ones and they can join us for a special prayer of their own faith as well,” added Dr. Doobay.

CMOHC has undertaken several innovative projects. The first project produced by CMOHC was the exhibition named Temples of Time. This exhibition takes visitors on a journey through out India, in both time and place to discover the evolution of the Hindu temples. Visitors learn about the philosophical elements of Hinduism, monumental feats of engineering and the cultural significance of this civilization.

Meeting God, is a new addition to the museum. Through photographs and interactive wooden shrines, this exhibition transports the viewer over the ages into the experience of a devotee in India. This critically acclaimed exhibition has been widely exhibited in major museums in the US, India and the UK.

CMOHC is also in the process of developing a Cosmic Theatre. This will become the centerpiece of the museum. It will be a unique multi media display that depicts the fascinating Vedic scriptures and the science behind the origins of the universe. The compatibility of ancient science and scriptures with modern science, including quantum physics and astronomy will fascinate the audience.

Other initiatives undertaken by CMOHC include the Wall of Peace, an exhibition presenting the stories of 10 iconic leaders of non-violence from both the past and present, against the background of violence from which they emerged.

Following is one of the exhibits of the CMOHC.
